I did it just for fun. Torvalds was doing the same. Many of the programmers of my age have a sim Gives a bit of a feeling of what Torvalds is like as a person, and the process by which he created Linux. Many of the programmers of my age have a similar experience. These days, programming is seen as a lucrative career, so many people go into it with that in mind rather than the joy of the experience.
In this book, Linus Torvalds comes across as a pretty nice guy. But this book stops before he created "git". And since "git" is evil, I have to wonder what happened to him! Just kidding.
But "git" is horrible. What IS interesting, philosophically, is that he comes right out and says "This is my life philosophy.
He just has this very mellow attitude. I don't know much about Linux, nor did I have any expectations of Linus and yet I found it to be this pleasant reflection on actually DOING something with your life, just because--just for fun.
It's far from a comprehensive history of Linux's early days, JfF reads more like a weekend conversation with a friend over beers, geeking out over the technological nostalgia, and telling a good story or two on the trials and tribulations that came from developing one's own OS.
Mar 22, Sameer rated it really liked it Recommended to Sameer by: Sanketh I Surprisingly mature book, with a mixture of biographical narration and commentary about technology. The last few chapters are especially worth a read. Interview in Revolution OS , documentary, Post to mlist. Hey, that's not a bug, that's a feature!
You know what the most complex piece of engineering known to man in the whole solar system is? Guess what — it's not Linux, it's not Solaris, and it's not your car. It's you. And me. And think about how you and me actually came about — not through any complex design. I'm deadly serious: we humans have never been able to replicate something more complicated than what we ourselves are, yet natural selection did it without even thinking.
Don't underestimate the power of survival of the fittest. And don't ever make the mistake that you can design something better than what you get from ruthless massively parallel trial-and-error with a feedback cycle. That's giving your intelligence much too much credit. Quite frankly, Sun is doomed. And it has nothing to do with their engineering practices or their coding style.
Coding style - a non-issue. Message to GCC mailing list. Torvalds did not originate this quote. It is a reference from David Braben following the release of Elite, and is itself a rephrasing of a reference to relative worth of game coding.
Re: ide. Personally, I'm not interested in making device drivers look like user-level. They aren't, they shouldn't be, and microkernels are just stupid. I allege that SCO is full of it.

Galli, Peter Those that can, do. Those that can't, complain. Post the Linux Kernel Mailing List. Archived from the original on Note: Torvalds did not originate this quote , and there are earlier records for it. This is a variation on "He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches," which is also attributed to George Bernard Shaw. Really, I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect. New York Times. Modern PCs are horrible.
ACPI is a complete design disaster in every way. But we're kind of stuck with it. If any Intel people are listening to this and you had anything to do with ACPI, shoot yourself now, before you reproduce. They are smoking crack.

Notes: said about SCO. There are literally several levels of SCO being wrong. And even if we were to live in that alternate universe where SCO would be right, they'd still be wrong. Kerstetter, Jim BusinessWeek Online. Shankland, Stephen Anybody who tells me I can't use a program because it's not open source, go suck on rms.
I'm not interested. Nobody should start to undertake a large project.
Just for Fun
You start with a small trivial project, and you should never expect it to get large. If you do, you'll just overdesign and generally think it is more important than it likely is at that stage.
Or worse, you might be scared away by the sheer size of the work you envision. So start small, and think about the details. And then war becomes a social-order thing.
See a Problem?
You start with a small trivial project, and you should never expect it to get large. This book has a chapter on programming in which Linus tries to explain what makes programming so special. That wasn't the case with Linus. Everybody has probably known someone in school like me.
