Countermeasures for ground displacement in earth pressure balance shield tunnelling
Surface settlements in poor geotechnical conditions show a high sensitivity to the tail shield gap values, while as the geotechnical conditions are becoming more favorable the influence is diminished. This becomes clear via Figure 8. Figure 6 Results of the surface settlements relative to the geotechnical conditions for the three different gaps.
It is noticeable that the volume loss values for the analyses range from 0. The analyses with the larger tail gaps had bigger volume loss values.
Figure 7 Results of the volume loss values relative to the geotechnical conditions for the three different gaps. Figure 8 depicts the movements of a specific soil node on the tunnel crown as the TBM passes this location.
Consequently, the soil with the favourable ground does not have large displacements resulting in no contact with the shield. Thus, the final surface settlements in the range of favourable geotechnical conditions in Figure 8, is the same for all the values of gts. The shield - soil interaction was modeled using interfaces, as well as the lining installation and the grouting procedure distinguishing the two different states were taken into account.
The results of the numerical analyses show that the simulation can reproduce the main characteristics of shield tunnelling concerning stresses, deformations and settlements in a realistic way. Therefore it can be used as a tool for the calculation in such complex and multi-parametric problems.
The main objective of this paper was the investigation of the influence of the tail shield gap on the surface settlements. It is a fact that induced surface settlements show a strong correlation with the value of the tail gap, according to the prevailing ground conditions.
In poor geotechnical conditions the tail gap has a great influence, since as it increases, both elastic and plastic deformation around the tunnel section are increased. On the other hand, in favourable ground conditions its influence is minimal, since the potential displacements are smaller than the gap value.
For the range of gap values that has been investigated 0 to 4cm the surface settlements varied from 0 to 25 mm.

These include reduced costs of tunnel construction, ability to excavate in grounds once considered impossible, improved advance rates and more data made available to machine designers. Goldfields Press. Publ Rotterdam. A A Balkema, Field measurements were made at the site of 4 intersecting tunnels driven through stiff to hard alluvium. Ground surface settlement, pore water pressures, lining loads and lining distortion were monitored.
Results are discussed.
Due to the complex and varying ground conditions, special tunnel boring machines will be used. The choice of and factors influencing this choice of an earth pressure balance machine are also described.
Twin tunnels driven through andesite and tuffaceous rocks are interconnected by 3 connect tunnels. Design and excavation of the intersections are described, along with monitoring carried out during excavation.
