The main objective of this paper was the investigation of the influence of the tail shield gap on the surface settlements. It is a fact that induced surface settlements show a strong correlation with the value of the tail gap, according to the prevailing ground conditions.

In poor geotechnical conditions the tail gap has a great influence, since as it increases, both elastic and plastic deformation around the tunnel section are increased. On the other hand, in favourable ground conditions its influence is minimal, since the potential displacements are smaller than the gap value.

For the range of gap values that has been investigated 0 to 4cm the surface settlements varied from 0 to 25 mm.
