The first book I got by accident. Yes, I know that site would have given me credit, but it was my mistake. It proved, however, to be a very nice mistake.

It was only after I started reading that I realized it was written for adolescents and young teens. But, darn, it was good!

I never expected the great novel of the century, an instant classic, or any of the other accolades that are heaped on books to get people to download them. The characters were well developed, mostly likable, and reminiscent of many people we meet in our daily lives. In the entire collection, there were few errors, either in development of the story or typographical, and what few there were did not detract from the story in any way.

If my grandchildren were younger, I would gladly recommend they read the books for entertainment, maybe even a life lesson, or two or three, along the way. Being 72 years old and still of sound mind, I can wholeheartedly recommend these books to the hands of young, old, and in between. Thank you, John Flanagan for your agile mind and a way with words.

I first read this book about 7 or 8 years ago even though it was a "Young Adult" title when I was in my late 40s. In fact, I bought the actual book - not the e-book - it was that long ago. The only regret I had about downloading it is that it meant I was going to be devoting a lot of my spare time to the reading of the rest of this series. So do not be fooled by its "Young Adult" categorization. This book is the start of an eleven book series and I have read every one of them. It is a well written book that basically introduces you to Will and Halt.

Their adventures are not in the Lord of the Rings category, but are enough to let you start to get to know them. Think of it as a character development book. And believe me, you are going to want to get to know these characters in the books that follow. Thank you, Mr. Flanagan, for writing this series and giving the world these characters.

Horace accepts. Meanwhile, Will is investigating a camp, and he sees that Tennyson has recruited three Genovesans foreigners; assassins.

He tells Horace and Halt this, and Halt is expecting treachery from Tennyson. The duel proceeds, with Horace barely winning against the chain and mace used by the first giant. Horace is then drugged by the assassins, causing his eyes to waver a lot, and he is unable to see clearly. Will shoots the second giant in the arm, after which he manages to accuse Tennyson.Exciting confrontations with bullies and wild boars help to establish the boy's emerging character.

When a cult springs up in neighboring Clonmel, promising to quell the recent attacks by lawless marauders, people flock from all over to offer gold in exchange for protection. Halt has sworn to rescue Will, and he will do anything to k I hope today's young kids are not so jaded they can not read this and find some comfort and stability before they reach the craziness and harshness of adulthood.

This closing episode sets the stage for a good-versus-evil war that will likely be at the heart of future volumes.
