For the first time in history, we faced an enemy that was actively waging total war. They had no limits of endurance.
They would never negotiate, never surrender. They would fight until the very end because, unlike us, every single one of them, every second of every day, was devoted to consuming all life on Earth.
Most of all, the audiobook captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event.
World War Z
Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the listener, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. More about Max Brooks.
A literate, ironic, strangely tasty treat. He details with extraordinary insight how in the face of institutional missteps and greed, people in unexpected ways achieve unique, creative, and effective strategies to survive and fight back. World War Z provides us with a starting point, at least, a basic blueprint from which to build a popular understanding of how, when, and why such a disaster came to be, and how small groups and individuals survived.
Creepy but fascinating. This is action-packed social-political satire with a global view.
It is gripping reading and a scathing indictment of weak responses to crises real and over-hyped. Brooks has delivered a full-blown horror novel, laced with sharp social and political observations and loads of macabre, gruesome imagery.
The real horror of World War Z comes from the all-too-plausible responses of human beings and governments to the menace.
Far more affecting than anything involving zombies really has any right to be. The book. World War Z continues that legacy.
Brooks also has the political savvy to take advantage of any paranoia a modern reader might feel. The perfect book for all us zombie junkies. Join Reader Rewards and earn your way to a free book! The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time.
To understand why you should care about World War Z, we need to first consider all the zombie stereotypes Brooks reworks in this novel.
Well, in World War Z, they… they walk exactly like that. Wait, wait, Brooks keeps that one too.
An Oral History of the Zombie War
Of course. You know it. All right, fine, maybe Brooks doesn't completely rewrite the rules of the zombie genre. But he does change the scope of your typical zombie tale. If you've ever watched a traditional zombie movie—let's say Romero's classic Living Dead series—then you've noticed that most zombie tales follow a small group of survivors as they attempt to do what survivors do: namely live.
The government may have collapsed, society may have crumbled, and technology may have failed, but we only see scant examples of this because we're so focused on our little group. We have no idea how these things fell apart. They just have.
World War Z pulls the scope back and focuses on survivors from around the world, all with different perspectives on the zombie apocalypse.
This vantage point grants us a full-on view of just how technology failed us, exactly why the government collapsed, and why our global society couldn't contend with those groaning ghoulies.Preview this item Preview this item. This is action-packed social-political satire with a global view.
