With Bitter End, we come to really like Alex: The thing is, both she and we as readers know that these things are wrong. But the fact is, she feels trapped and continues making excuses.

What Brown does so successfully in this story is set up a victim who cannot be blamed. We empathize with her immensely because we are right there in her mind.

The secondary characters in this book are all well drawn and add to the greater arc of the story. They care deeply about Alex and they offer her all of the help they can without downright meddling in her affairs.

Each of them has a distinct personality, despite not having all that much page time. I had to read this one in spurts, since it does get difficult to read straight through.

We can sympathize without justifying. Perhaps most important, though, is that Brown never makes any sort of statement that creates a villain of one gender and a victim of another. This is probably due to the fact this story focuses less on plot and more on character, and the wrap-up is key to the plot, rather than the character.

Fans of Sarah Dessen or Deb Caletti will likely enjoy this book, as well. It's so easy for people on the outside of an abusive relationship to just say the victim shold stand up for herself or himself , or thatthey would never let anyone treat them that way.

At first, Alex is blissfully happy. Sure, Cole seems a little jealous of her relationship with her close friend Zack, but what guy would want his girlfriend spending all her time with another boy?

As the months pass, though, Alex can no longer ignore Coles small putdowns, pinches, and increasingly violent threats. As Alex struggles to come to terms with the sweet boyfriend she fell in love with and the boyfriend whose love she no longer recognizes, she is forced to choosebetween her true love and herself. After so many instances of this, your eyes might start to glaze over and the novel suddenly becomes longer than it is.

I'm still reeling from this one. She's afraid she's begun to lose herself, and she's not sure who she really is, or even was anymore.

Using textual examples, support your position. Those scenes are tough to survive for both the reader and Alex.

Boy acts like a butthole. At first, Alex is blissfully happy. So that was painful to read about and relive. But it rarely happens that way and the vicious cycle continues.
