Knowledge in the field of parasitology must be kept at a high level and up to date in order to fight a parasitosis as quickly and effectively as possible. The third. The purpose of this book is to give a comprehensive review of the facts and trends in veterinary and human parasitology, through contributions.

In classical ecotoxicological research physiological, behavioral or molecular changes are determined as a response to adverse environmental changes, often due to the presence and effects of pollutants [ 22 ] or habitat disturbance.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If parasites are considered as effect indicators, applicable approaches mainly focus on direct effects of pollutants on the viability and longevity of free-swimming stages such as cercariae or on changes in population and community structure. In the sense that parasites are integrative parts of food webs within ecosystems, environmental changes can be earmarked by parasites if one of their developmental stages or one of their hosts is negatively affected.

In either situation, such adverse effects result in numerical changes of parasites, i. Once we are able to predict and calibrate such numerical changes within parasite communities depending on the type and intensity of human impacts, parasites can be powerful tools to indicate environmental changes.

Recent studies on these issues are summarized and promising research ideas are presented and discussed. In detail, we will address the following topics: i parasites as accumulation indicators and their possible application to demonstrate biological availability of pollutants; ii parasites as pollutant sinks; iii the interaction between parasites and biomarkers and their consequences for host health; iv contaminant effects on free-living stages of parasites; and v parasites as indicators for ecosystem health.

Parasites as accumulation indicators and tools to demonstrate biological availability of pollutants A large number of studies have demonstrated and highlighted a high accumulation potential of different parasite taxa and identified them as useful sentinels for chemical pollution.

In comparison to established free-living accumulation indicators, parasites are often able to take up chemicals e. Thus, they can bioconcentrate pollutants which are present in very low concentrations in the environment and make them detectable and quantifiable using conventional analytical techniques.

Furthermore, some parasites were found to tolerate very high pollutant burdens see below , which suggest that they might be applicable as sentinels for polluted habitats. Moreover, since accumulation indicators provide important information about the biological availability of pollutants, parasites represent possible diagnostic tools for assessing the behaviour of chemicals in the environment and to what degree they are available for uptake by the biota.

Taxonomy and phylogenetics[ edit ] The huge diversity between parasitic organisms creates a challenge for biologists who wish to describe and catalogue them. Recent developments in using DNA to identify separate species and to investigate the relationship between groups at various taxonomic scales has been enormously useful to parasitologists, as many parasites are highly degenerate , disguising relationships between species.

History[ edit ] Cyst and imago of Giardia lamblia , the protozoan parasite that causes giardiasis. The species was first observed by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in This was the first protozoan parasite of humans that he recorded, and the first to be seen under a microscope.

His earlier book Osservazioni intorno agli animali viventi che si trovano negli animali viventi Observations on Living Animals found in Living Animals described and illustrated over parasites including the human roundworm.

James Paget discovered the intestinal nematode Trichinella spiralis in humans in James McConnell described the human liver fluke in A physician at the French naval hospital at Toulon, Louis Alexis Normand, in researching the ailments of French soldiers returning from what is now Vietnam, discovered the only known helminth that, without treatment, is capable of indefinitely reproducing within a host and causes the disease strongyloidiasis.

Manson further predicted that the malaria parasite, Plasmodium , had a mosquito vector, and persuaded Ronald Ross to investigate. Ross confirmed that the prediction was correct in — At the same time, Giovanni Battista Grassi and others described the malaria parasite's life cycle stages in Anopheles mosquitoes. This work, one of Springer's renowned and authoritative Major Reference Works, contributes to these goals in several ways.

First, it comprises a number of entries, consisting of both in-depth essays and definitions. Secondly, the content has been improved even more by adding additional tables and high-quality figures.

Thirdly, the extensive linking between definitions and essays facilitates information within a minimum of time. International contributors, who are well-known specialists in their fields, give a comprehensive review of all parasites and therapeutic strategies in veterinarian and human parasitology.

This 4th edition presents all important parasites of humans and animals in detail and the less important ones in short. Existing entries are updated and presented in the light of the latest knowledge.
