Discrepancies were resolved by discussion, and the same third author arbitrated if necessary. We examined the texts of included trials for reported adverse events and checked registration information at trial registers for all included trials.
The two reviewers independently undertook risk-of-bias assessment using Cochrane methods.
We undertook sensitivity analyses based on patient age adult or child , drug doses and durations of therapy, and we analyzed funnel plots to determine potential publication bias.
We planned several subgroup analyses see protocol at www.
The numbers needed to harm NNH were estimated as follows: the OR for each harm was multiplied by the risk of harm with placebo after converting this value to its odds to derive the odds of harm in the antibiotic group; these odds were converted back to risks, and the absolute risk difference was then calculated. Of the remaining studies, 45 were included in the qualitative analysis and 25 in the quantitative analysis Figure 1.

As one would expect from an ASM publication, the book is well designed, with plenty of headings and sub-headings that break up the text and enable the reader to easily navigate each chapter. The diagrams, most commonly showing the chemical structures of individual drugs, are uniformly of high quality. Given the vast amount of information available in the chapters that go to make up this new edition, the two print volumes unfortunately suffer from the fact that they each weigh just under 4.
However, this is compensated for by the availability of an ebook, a format also more likely to appeal to the new generation of scientists and clinicians interested in antimicrobial chemotherapy.

Most antibiotics are prescribed by primary care clinicians for common infections, particularly acute respiratory infections. Having had the opportunity to review this book, I feel I should mention the point made by Professor Robert C.
Each section is divided into a number of parts, each focusing on a class of anti-infective; these in turn comprise a series of chapters on individual drugs.
Interpretation: Diarrhea was caused by use of amoxicillin—clavulanic acid, and candidiasis was caused by both amoxicillin and amoxicillin—clavulanic acid. Thus, it is a useful source of information for both the laboratory worker in either a research or routine laboratory and the practising clinician.
