Preface. This textbook of neurology, a translation and revision of the original book in German, was written for students of medicine. Persons starting their careers. A catalogue record for this book is available from the British Library. .. zation and neurological foundations of memory. He is a former. Excellent textbooks of neurology already exist, which deal with the subject in a detailed and comprehensive manner. This is not what the majority of clinical.
Another "plus" is the detailed explanation of all eponyms and physical examination maneuvers as they appear in the text. Deficiencies: The chapter on sports medicine is too brief and should be expanded in general and to include examples of injuryspecific rehabilitation programs. The chapter on anesthesia for orthopedic procedures is interesting but suffers from a puzzling absence of diagrams or illustrations, which are plentiful throughout the rest of the book.
Recommended Readership: Currently the best example of its genre, this book will serve as a helpful review encompassing the depth and breadth of orthopedics for students at all stages in the field. Physicians in training or preparing for board certification examinations will find it exceedingly helpful. Goetz and Eric J. Scope of Book: This text is intended as a general reference and information source for a broad scope of topics relevant to the clinical practice of general neurology.
Contents: The book presents a broad-spectrum review of neurologic problems that are likely to be encountered in the practice of general neurology. The book is divided into 3 sections devoted to neurologic symptoms, common neurologic ancillary testing, and disease-specific discussions. Each section contains numerous chapters dealing with multiple topics.
The common neurologic disorders are discussed along with rare disorders that are unlikely to be recognized outside a neurologic specialty practice. A companion CD-ROM not available for this review has numerous video examples referenced within the text of the chapters.
Strengths: This book nicely reviews a broad array of topics. It includes a section on neurologic differential diagnosis based on presenting symptoms, an area that, in general, has been lacking in previous textbooks of similar caliber. For personal use. Mass reproduce only with permission from Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Mayo Clin Proc, December , Vol 74 Deficiencies: The broad scope of the text does not allow an indepth discussion of either common or uncommon neurologic problems.
Although the list of topics addressed is comprehensive, the coverage of the individual subjects is often superficial. The book is well referenced, however, for readers who wish to explore particular topics in more depth.
Recommended Readership: The book is most appropriate for neurology residents and students with a particular interest in neurology. It may also be appropriate for general neurologists as a quick source of reference to more detailed reviews.

More recently, trials have proven that endovascular thrombectomy is superior to medical therapy alone, advancing the standard of care for patients who present with acute ischemic stroke from a large vessel occlusion and salvageable brain tissue.
The treatment of hemorrhagic stroke now involves the use of novel pharmacological agents and advanced minimally invasive technology. Important changes have also occurred at the levels of hospital organization and treatment decision-making. Such changes in organization and designation of hospitals with distinct levels of stroke care and the variety of stroke protocols now requires team work of emergency medical services EMS , Emergency Department, stroke neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neurointerventionalists.
About this book
This book provides an overview of the modern medical and surgical options for the treatment of patients with acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.
The pivotal role of EMS in prehospital evaluation and triage of a stroke patient and the levels of stroke systems of care are discussed. It focuses on the nature of addiction as a brain disorder that includes a range of different behavioural traits such as impulsivity and reward dependence, and discusses the critical role of kinetic and pharmacological factors.
The also explains how the primary pharmacological targets of drugs of abuse are now understood, the relation to the variable nature of addiction to different substances, and how this may lead to new approaches to treatment. The author develops an integrated account of these two The author develops an integrated account of these two phenomena, rooted in a classical conception of akrasia as valuing without intending and at the same time intending without valuing.
This fascinating and suggestive account addresses a number of paradoxes faced by current thinking about addiction and weakness of will, in particular the significance of control and intention for responsible action. Addiction and Weakness of Will makes an original contribution to central issues in moral psychology and philosophy of action, including the relationship between responsibility and intentional agency, and the nature and scope of moral appraisal. An important reason for this lack of recognition of a serious health problem is a paucity of clinical knowledge An important reason for this lack of recognition of a serious health problem is a paucity of clinical knowledge about how such disorders present in this population.
The presentation for alcohol and substance use disorders in the elderly can be confusing, given the metabolic changes and concurrent conditions associated with aging, together with interactions between alcohol and prescribed psychoactive drugs.
Further, screening instruments have not been validated for this population. Brief interventions may be effective but should take into account contextual needs such as medical conditions, cognitive decline, and mobility limitations. Treatment strategies, including detoxification regimens, need to be modified for older patients and - in the case of opioid dependence - must address the management of chronic pain in this population.
Ironically, benzodiazepines are the most frequently prescribed psychoactive medication in the elderly, despite older individuals' greater sensitivity to side effects and toxicity.
Older women are at particularly heightened vulnerability for iatrogenic dependence on sedatives and hypnotics. More clinical research data are needed to inform screening and referral strategies, behavioral therapies, and pharmacological treatment.
At the same time, emerging technologies such as communication tools and monitoring devices offer important opportunities to advance addiction treatment and recovery management in older adults. Although research to date has been limited in this population, recent data suggest that treatment outcomes are equal or better to those seen in younger cohorts.
